BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Network Technology) –

Top Up Computer Science continuously changes the way we experience our world, in all areas of everyday life whether it be science, entertainment, education, gaming, communications, lifestyle. This is achieved through the development of new technology and applications.

This programme provides you with the opportunity to develop the experience, skills and knowledge to design and develop a variety of software and hardware computing solutions for real-world problems. The curriculum is informed by academic theory and provides a framework with which to analyse the potential and actual performance of contemporary networks and network systems. We aim to prepare you for a career in a rapidly changing industry that is constantly evolving. It includes the latest developments in computer networking to offer a broad view of the networking industry. You will also have the chance to consider the legal, social, ethical and commercial issues that affect this industry.

You will be supported to become confident and enterprising while developing key employability skills including team work, communication and time management, all essential for the workplace.

Total fees for three years Degree is £11,500 – Level4 Fees is £4000 and Level 5 Fees os £4000.00. The tuition fees for University of Lincoln Top up is £3500.00 paid directly to University. The fees is subject to change every academic year.

To enrol onto the Level 4 course, you must be at least 18 and have a full secondary education. Before enroling on to the Level 5 course, you must complete the Level 4 or equivalent.

Introduction to computing

This module will explore the functions of computing systems and the basics of design, configuration and routine maintenance.

Introduction to programming

This module examines the basis of OOS and how programming fits into the broader aspects of usage of applications.

Introduction to databases

This module will enable understanding of database design and development and enable students to develop and design a database and explore solutions to meet client brief . Learners will learn how to design a database.

Requirements engineering

This module is concerned with the analysis of IT and computing needs to develop requirement specifications and develop and test prototypes.

Systems analysis and design

This module provides an understanding of IS concepts and how they relate to organisation needs in respect of business processes and transformation of information.

E- Commerce applications

This module explores the role of e-commerce in the modern world and in particular the identification of aims and objectives within a business and the design issues arising from the definition of requirements.

Human computer interaction

This module will develop students understanding of principles and models of human computer interaction and evaluate existing HCI design and principles and use this to help them plan their own prototype multimedia user interface.

IT and society

This module examines the impact of technology on society and explores trends and changes created. It will examine management issues and potential conflicts in terms of security and data management.

Information systems project management

This module explores elements of project management key to successful development and implementation of specific IT projects.

Management information systems

This module focuses on understanding concepts of information systems and how they support business needs in terms of information processing and data processing.

Technopreneurship

This unit aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills needed to establish a new techno business. It includes understanding the characteristics of entrepreneurs, planning, marketing and finance.

Network security

This unit aims to provide learners with knowledge of network security issues in a networked environment and the process of preventing and detection common security incidents

C#.NET Programming

This unit aims to provide learners with the basic concepts and principles of ASP.NET programming using C#. This will enable learners to understand how to create dynamic web pages using server side programming techniques

System Administration

This unit aims to provide the knowledge needed to administer a system in Linux and Windows. Topics covered include user and group management; file system management; task automation; shell scripting; Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers; mail servers; domain name servers; files and printers sharing; basic utilities and tools; application management; registry; local and group policies; backup policies; restore policies and performance tuning

Network Routing and Switching

This unit aims to deliver the knowledge needed to carry out switching and the knowledge and skills needed to carry out routing – how to set up and configure a router and switches to interconnect a multi area network. The unit covers computer networks routing and switching including Router Information Protocol (RIP); Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF).

Network Design and Administration

This unit aims to provide the knowledge and skills needed to enable learners to design a network i.e.how to scale and connect different networks to form an effective inter-connecting network. It covers hierarchical network design; gathering network requirements; identifying network performance issues.

Modules This is a top up programme to the final year of a degree with only final year modules.

The roles they can expect to fill include software developers, network analysts, web designers, IT consultants, database analysts or network administrators, within employment sectors that are diverse; manufacturing, commerce, entertainment or finance. Alongside specialised knowledge you will develop and enhance a range of transferable skills and attributes which are in great demand by employers, these include your intellectual and imaginative powers, your ability to be critical, and your independence and self-awareness, effective communication, team working, leadership, problem solving and creative thinking. This course is also an excellent foundation for postgraduate study.
